Recreation Aotearoa Strengthen & Adapt Project

Ki uta tārei ai, Ki tai rewa ai
Prepared on shore, so we can set sail

In 2021 Recreation Aotearoa was selected to be part of Sport NZ's Strengthen and Adapt programme. Strengthen and Adapt was established to improve the capacity, capability and resilience of selected national partners and their delivery networks, so that they are best positioned to meet the needs of New Zealanders particpating in sport and physical activity into the future.

Recreation Aotearoa were selected to be a part of this process based on the impact of our strategic plan, Te Whai Oranga, and our committment to embedding te Tirti approaches into our organisation. This funding is allowing us the opportunity to explore the future for recreation within Aotearoa and imagine what Recreation Aotearoa would look like if we created meaningful partnerships with iwi, hapu, and Māori.

With this project we will develop a Strengthen and Adapt Plan that gives mana to Te Whai Oranga. Through conversations and consultation, we will be able to identify potential areas of change for the organisation and how our stakeholders/members feel about transformational change. This project will also provide us with a sound foundation in which we can make informed decisions in the future.

Where are we going?

  • Through our members all tāngata o Aotearoa can access recreation opportunities regardless of location, age, ethnicity, gender, ability, or socio-economic status.
  • Recreation Aotearoa and members will improve cultural capability, increase Māori membership and the number of iwi relationships.
  • To explore new approaches to co-governance/co-leadership with Māori
  • A place where our strategy is linked to reality.
  • Revitalisation of mātauranga Māori within the recreation sectors.

What does it mean for you?

This project may see a change of our own structure and operation – which will impact the way we communicate and work with you. But most importantly it will take a deep dive into the enhancement of your own work and give an insight into recreation from both a Māori and non-Māori worldview. We hope that this project will give you the support and resources to build relationships with Māori in your local area and drive better recreational outcomes for all.

We will be creating opportunities for you to have your input and to become a part of this journey with us. In the meantime we ask that you comeplete our survey to share your thoughts and views on this project. We value any input and look forward to continuing on this journey with you.
