Draft advocacy priorities
We’re currently reviewing our advocacy priorities to ensure they’re aligned with our organisation’s strategy refresh, due in 2025.
The following priorities will be reviewed by our Regional Advisory Group in early December. We welcome feedback from our members. See how to provide your feedback below.
- Greater recognition of the economic and social value of recreation.
We aim to ensure that the full value of recreation – both in economic terms and its contribution to social wellbeing – is recognised across all sectors. - Grow local and central government investment in recreation.
We advocate for increased government funding to support and expand recreational opportunities for all New Zealanders. - More development opportunities for recreation workers.
A sustainable recreation industry relies on a skilled workforce. We support the growth of professional development opportunities to meet the evolving needs of participants and the sector. - A legislative and regulatory environment that maximises the benefits of the recreation sector for all New Zealanders.
- Improved recognition of mātauranga Māori / Māori knowledge in recreation and the integration of te ao Māori / the Māori worldview perspectives and practices into recreational planning and delivery.
- Ensure all communities have equitable access to quality recreational facilities and programmes, regardless of socioeconomic status, geographical location, or ability.
- Ensure recreation is inclusive and accessible for all, particularly people with disabilities.
- Address the impact of climate change on recreation and promote sustainability in the recreation sector.
- Ensure improved and enduring access to public recreation spaces.
