Submission on Refresh of the New Zealand Disability Strategy
Recreation Aotearoa welcomed the opportunity to submit on the Draft Refresh of the New Zealand Disability Strategy 2026–2030 (NZDS).
Overview of general comments
We asserted that accessible recreation is critical to realising the NZDS principles of accessibility, participation, and inclusion, and is a fundamental contributor to New Zealanders’ wellbeing. Our submission advocates for the explicit recognition of accessible recreation infrastructure — such as parks, play areas, outdoor spaces, and aquatic facilities — as essential components in achieving the strategy’s goals. We urged the Ministry for Disabled People – Whaikaha to encourage government agencies, including local authorities, to implement strategies that enhance recreation accessibility.
