Tuakana–Teina Mentorship Programme refreshed

A more flexible, empowering approach to mentoring.

Recreation Aotearoa has refreshed the Tuakana–Teina Mentorship Programme to better support professionals across New Zealand’s recreation sector.

Mentoring helps grow confidence, build networks, and support career development. Delivered in partnership with the Generate Network NZ, the programme connects Teina (mentees) with experienced Tuakana (mentors) from across the sector.

Tuakana–Teina is a concept from te ao Māori. It reflects a relationship where both people learn from each other through shared knowledge, skills, and experience. A Teina is someone growing their career. They gain guidance, build confidence, and develop their professional network. A Tuakana is an experienced professional. They share knowledge, strengthen their leadership skills, and give back to the sector.

The refreshed approach gives more flexibility to the programme. Instead of running as a fixed cohort, it now operates on an as-requested basis. This allows participants to join when the time is right and shape a mentoring relationship that works for them.

The programme will relaunch in April. Now is a great time to get involved, especially if you are interested in becoming a Tuakana and supporting the next generation of recreation professionals.

The programme is free to join and open to professionals across the recreation sector.
