Introducing Te Whai Oranga 2025–2030: Our next strategic horizon
We’re proud to share the next step in our collective journey — Te Whai Oranga 2025–2030.
This journey began in 2020 with the introduction of, Te Whai Oranga 2020 - 2025. Te Whai Oranga means ‘the active pursuit of wellbeing’ and it is our intergenerational strategic plan for Recreation Aotearoa members, shaped by Aotearoa, for Aotearoa. The strategy draws on both Māori and non-Māori knowledge and approaches. By weaving together different ways of seeing the world, our members and the recreation industry can help create a better future for New Zealand. Te Whai Oranga is a living example of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in action.
Key concepts behind Te Whai Oranga 2025 - 2030
Te Whai Oranga 2025-2030 recognises the interconnectedness of the natural environment, place, and people — past, present, and future.
The strategy uses a voyaging narrative to describe where we have come from and where Recreation Aotearoa is heading.
Using the concept of ngā pae — the many horizons — it reflects on the past and looks forward to the future:
- Te pae rangi — the stars that guide us — our aspirational vision).
- Te pae tawhiti — the far horizon — our long-term outcomes.
- Te pae tata — the near horizon — our short-term outcomes.
Our strategic priorities are shown as islands of success along the way. They focus on the areas that matter most to our members — helping us move collectively towards a stronger, more connected, and sustainable recreation sector.
The priorities guide our annual work programme. They will also guide the range of programmes, events, and member services Recreation Aotearoa provides to achieve our outcomes and vision.
The many people and organisations in the recreation industry are pictured as a fleet of waka hourua — double-hulled canoes — voyaging together towards these islands and the horizons beyond.
