Aotearoa’s tramping culture is unique, from chatting to strangers in a hut, exchanging notes on track conditions, sharing experiences online or through storytelling. The outdoors is so much more than just a place to explore, it’s part of the fabric and culture of Aotearoa.

This sharing culture sits at the heart of Plan My Walk, created by the NZ Mountain Safety Council (MSC), and is one of the drivers for creating a community through its specific features.

MSC developed Plan My Walk after in-depth analysis of incident data confirmed thousands of preventable safety incidents every year were attributed to a lack of quality planning and preparation. Its creation comes from a place of encouraging adventure, improving safety, and influencing positive behaviour. It’s about getting out there and exploring; safely.

By using Plan My Walk, users select a track, enter their trip dates and find track alerts, a customisable gear list and weather forecast. Then create a trip plan, assign an emergency contact, share it!

In its second year of encouraging safer tramping adventures, Plan My Walk’s newest features encourage getting outdoors. Two specific features that will benefit those participating in Get Outdoors Week 2022 are the reviews section and the ability to filter, all supporting accessibility in the outdoors.

The option to leave a review with a photo from any track, hut or campsite means anyone using Plan My Walk benefits from fellow trampers and walker’s information about how difficult they found the track, tips and advice, and more up-to-date details such as track conditions. This means knowledgeable trampers’ advice can be shared with others.

When choosing a track, there are a few ways they can be narrowed down by using the filters. For those needing to filter by accessibility whether that’s for mobility differences or a family with a buggy or a wheelchair, or even with a dog, Plan My Walk makes it easy to find. There is a track for everyone, no matter your abilities.

So, whether it’s a local bushwalk, a day trip or an overnight tramping this Get Outdoors Week, join the Plan My Walk community to find the right track for you, snap a photo and be in to win.
