A highlight of the 2018 NZCCC conference was the inaugural NZ Cemetery and Crematoria Awards. The awards recognise excellence in the industry with categories for Outstanding Newcomer, Innovation, and Individual Excellence.

The Outstanding Newcomer award was presented to Renee Twomey from Whakatane District Council. Renee shows commitment and enthusiasm for all things cemetery, a willingness to understand the sector and demonstrates an empathetic and inclusive attitude when engaging with families.

The Innovation Award was presented to Waikumete Cemetery for their Natural Burial Area development. Highlights of the development include a detailed landscape plan, a sustainably-designed committal shelter and inclusive annual family planting days. The development of the natural burial area has seen over 5000 native trees planted so far.

The Individual Excellence Award was presented to Hayden Parr from Whangarei District Council’s Manu Cemetery. Hayden demonstrates an inclusive approach which has positively impacted the wider community, innovative use of current resources to meet need and leads innovation both within and outside of his direct role.
