- Your shoes must be so clean that you would lick them - both before and after you go into the forest (of any kind, not just kauri). So removing every tiny speck of dirt is the key. You can get 1000 spores on a pinhead of soil and it only takes a single spore to infect a new forest. It is all about cleaning your shoes properly, not about what you spray them with

If you go out walking make sure you have a bag or a bucket to put the dirty shoes in before you get back in the car. You must not wear your walking shoes in the car or you will leave tiny particles of soil & spores in the footwell that you will transfer in & out wherever you go.

Cleaning them (and whatever you are keeping them in) in an INSIDE sink - not under the hose in the garden - is really important. The oospores hatch out into the swimming zoospores in water, so you don't want to be generating a load of infectious material in your garden by washing down shoes & equipment. All washing (e.g. from bikes) must be contained & poured down an inside sink into the sewer or septic tank and NOT poured down the nearest stormwater drain.

For people with kauri on their property it is really important that every member of the household has a single pair of shoes that they only wear on the property - and they don't wear other shoes on the property. They do not get into their car with their property shoes on. They need to make sure anyone coming onto their property cleans shoes & equipment before they arrive & when they leave. This applies especially to tradies - gardeners, mowers, builders, plumbers, arborists - anyone who is disturbing the soil or leaf litter.
- Anyone needing to have trees removed must follow the instructions on the attached leaflet. If their arborist doesn't want to do it then get another arborist who will. Removal of infected material to anywhere other than a licensed contaminated landfill is an offence under the Biosecurity Act.
