Kauri Dieback

For those who enjoy the multitude of recreational activities undertaken in native forest in the upper North Island, Kauri dieback is an issue that could impact us deeply. The iconic and much-loved Kauri tree is under severe threat and we understand that the most effective mitigation in the short-medium term is to close tracks where Kauri are present. This would obviously have a devastating impact on the most common forms of recreation in New Zealand’s most populous areas.

NZRA is in contact with the lead government agency, the Ministry of Primary Industries, on this issue. We are also reaching out to other key stakeholders, including the Department of Conservation, Auckland Council and the Walking Access Commission.

NZRA and the Federated Mountain Clubs are joint-hosting a meeting in late-February/early March (exact date tba) to be briefed on the issue by MPI, DoC and Auckland Council.

If you wish to attend this briefing, please e-mail me on sam@nzcrecreation.org.nz
