INSIGHTS: Youth & Wellbeing

More young New Zealanders are affected by poor mental wellbeing than ever before, and those on lower incomes are often the most affected.

In recent surveys, young people are reporting higher levels of depression and anxiety, as well as difficulties in accessing counsellors and other kinds of support. At the same time, that rate of participation in active recreation and sport by rangatahi is dropping off.

We know that participation in recreation, creative and artistic activities makes a difference to the mental wellbeing of rangatahi. The many benefits of participation range from reducing the impact of stress and ruminative thought (worrying!), creating feelings of belonging and connectedness, and lowering levels of depression and anxiety.

Read more about what works for rangatahi and their communities in terms of provision and find out about some of the great work in this space.
