Daniel Chrisp

Daniel started with his previous employer as a Gardener, and like many of us in the industry got into the job unintentionally. He has now been working in the Cemetery space for over five Years. He started working at Taita Cemetery in Lower Hutt, and is now the Cemeteries Manager for Porirua City Council. He is glad he has worked at two different sites, with different soil types and one being a closed cemetery, and the other being an active cemetery and crematoria. Daniel lives in Wainuiomata with his Wife and two boys (6 and 3) and grew up in Lower Hutt. His G.G.G Grandfather is buried in Makaraka Cemetery, Gisborne.

"I love networking with other people within the cemetery industry and I am passionate about what we do as cemetery workers. I love that no two days are the same and that we end up with really good work stories! I am learning more and more every year now that I am working in this field, and can see how people end up working their whole lives in cemeteries. I love that our cemeteries are a community space and a cross section of that community with diverse cultures and beliefs represented. I am also passionate about the history and heritage that is buried within our cemeteries, I'm a bit of a research nerd for this stuff but between full time work and two young boys at home I just don't have the time! I am excited that we have started work on a national training program that is being developed by cemetery staff for cemetery staff."

I have been part of the following projects / areas to date and can provide advice or experience on any of them:

  • Replacing our old Cemeteries Database with a modern one
  • Turning an un useable space in our cemetery into a memorial walk
  • Advising on a 2.4m project of refurbishing our chapel and replacing a cremator
  • Helped write a submission on the review of the Burial and Cremation Act
  • Installed new QR codes in a historic cemetery to tell the stories of the notable people buried there

Craig Morton

Craig is a qualified Monumental Mason and has worked in the industry for 31 years.

He have been an active member of the New Zealand Master Monumental Masons Association, with numerous years on the management committee, a term as president and with a life membership awarded in 2019.

He was also the industry representative on the Creative Trades ITO until it disbanded and moved to the BCITO where he sits on the National Advisory Group for Stonemasonary.
