The New Zealand Recreation Association (NZRA) is a progressive organisation committed to meeting the professional needs of people and organisations associated with all aspects of recreation, leisure, parks, aquatic, conservation and sport service delivery.

Direct benefits of membership

All members can receive the quarterly journal Australasian Parks and Leisure, the bimonthly email newsletter Active Thinking, are eligible for discounted professional development at all training opportunities and have one vote at all general meetings.

Note: Subscriptions are for 12 months from 1 July to 30 June. All fees are in New Zealand dollars.

Membership categories

A   Individual Member   Earning more than $50k = $115.00

                Earning less than $50k = $60.00

Any person currently working in a recreation and/or leisure related position.

B   Associate Member - $115.00

                Any person who is associated with the recreation and leisure industry and has not met the criteria for individual membership.

C   Student Member - $10.00

Any tertiary student enrolled full time in a leisure-related course. Note:  student members do not receive the Australasian Parks and Leisure journal.

D   Corporate Membership

Any body corporate which employs any person working in a recreation and/or leisure related position.  See corporate membership form for pricing structure.

E   Accreditation Scheme

NZRA administers the Recreation Industry Accreditation Scheme.  This requires holding a level of certified attainment of professional recreation excellence.  An Accreditation Board assesses applicants to ensure quality and consistency.  Those who meet the standard can use the term Accredited Recreation Professional or ARP after their name.

NZRA Membership Frequently Asked Membership Questions

Q: Who should join NZRA? - Why?
A: All Chief Executives, Recreation Planners/Managers, Councillors and Directors who have a role in planning and business management of recreation organisations need to join. To take advantage of all the opportunities to meet with peers and share ideas and best practice at events such as the annual National Conference and the Thinking Recreation Seminar. Note the individual membership fee is covered by attending one national seminar or conference.

All Facility/Recreation/Parks Managers who are looking for solutions to mutual issues and problems that challenge them on a daily basis. The national and regional seminars and workshops will be an opportunity to seek out solutions, identify the right people to talk to and gain industry recognition by presenting at these events.

All Senior Pool Lifeguards, Team Leaders, Recreation Programmers and Instructors who have been committed to recreation or show promise for future promotion in the industry. They will be kept informed of trends in the industry, new and successful initiatives, professional development and career opportunities. Their participation in the national and regional seminars and workshops will grow their knowledge and networks within the industry. They will increase their passion to improve in their role and return to work inspired.

Note: An individual membership fee is redeemed by attending just one national seminar/conference!

Q: When should I join?
A: To get the most out of your membership you should be a member from 1 July every year. That means you will receive all benefits for the full membership year.

Corporate Discount
Q: How can I pay for my X number of staff?
A: There are several ways
For example for 3 Senior Managers and 3 Facility Managers and 2 Team Leaders
You would pay $400.00 and your 5 Managers (one will be the complimentary membership) at $55.00 and Team Leaders at $30.00. This means a total of $735.00

Payment ideas:
Company pays all = $735.00
Why? It can be a benefit to add to your staff employment package "We provide you with an industry membership opportunity". It can be a status indicator within your organisation. You are investing in the professional development of key staff.

Company pays all and gets staff to pay out of wages over a period of time.
Why? To help staff that you know would want to and would benefit from being a member of their professional association.
