New Pool Water Quality Standard
Standards New Zealand has published a revised Standard for Pool Water Quality NZS 5826:2010.

NZS 5826 provides guidance for pool owners and pool managers to check water quality measurements and maintain water quality, to safeguard the health of pool users.
NZS 5826 is an important public health Standard and the 2010 edition has been substantially updated to include a new approach based on risk management principles and to reflect current knowledge, technology, and processes. Although new to this Standard, risk assessment is not intended to be an onerous task, but an opportunity to improve the effective management of pool water quality for all pool operators and pool users. The information provided in NZS 5826 will be essential to meeting these requirements. NZS 5826 covers methods of water treatment and safe handling of swimming pool chemicals for fresh water and seawater swimming and spa pools, and geothermal pools, during use. It also requires all public pools to have 'risk management plans' in place to ensure that swimming pools are operated as safely as possible. NZS 5826 helps pool owners and pool managers to list all risks involved in running a pool, assess these risks, and pre-plan how they would address each risk.

Compliance with NZS 5826 is a PoolSafe requirement (NZS 5826 is cited in the Public Health Act 2007). All public pools must produce a pool water quality risk management plan specific to their operation by 1 December 2010. The best opportunity for you to understand the changes to NZS 5826 and learn how to produced a risk management plan for pool water quality will be at this year’s aquatics conference (JAWS). I strongly recommend that all public pools are represented by a relevant staff member/s at the NZS 5826 session at JAWS in Tauranga on 19-20 August.

New Pool Alone Brochure & Radio Ads
Increasingly children are being left unsupervised at public swimming pools. Tragically a two year old boy drowned at a PoolSafe Pool in 2007. The incident was reviewed by NZRA and WSNZ, the report highlighted the need for direct supervision of young children by parents and caregivers and strict enforcement of the Pool Alone policy. Lifeguards do a great job of keeping our pools safe, but they are not babysitters. Your Child Your Responsibility - is a brochure targeted at parents and caregivers of children. NZRA has also produced a series of three new Pool
Alone radio ads designed to promote enjoyment and safe supervision at public pools this summer. More>>

Swimming Pool Design Standard
A new Code of Practice for Swimming Pool Design will now assist pool designers, pool installers, and associated maintenance staff in their efforts to enhance the safety of pool users – while also ensuring a consistent standard of pool design and construction throughout the country. The Standard, published in July, covers the essential aspects of the design and construction of swimming pools and provision of water treatment facilities.
