Inaugural Water Safety Awards Presented Congratulations to the AC Baths Taupo (Awareness) and the Rotorua Aquatic Centre (Education) for winning Water Safety Awards at the inaugural Water Safety Conference - Charting the Future. The awards were introduced to recognize the excellent work being done by Kiwis dedicated to preventing injury and drowning. Category winners each receive a $5,000 contribution towards professional development. Sport Northland won the Prevention category award and Alan Haddock, a long time member of the coastguard boating industry, won the Individual award for his outstanding contribution during 40 years of water safety work. Pool Water Quality Standard Review The Pool Water Quality Standard (NZS 5826) will be reviewed in 2009. The Scope of NZS 5826 "covers the essential aspects of the operation and maintenance of pools in regard to pool water quality criteria including reference to methods of water treatment. It does not cover maintenance of heating equipment or of mechanical and electrical equipment. The design of swimming pools is covered in NZS 4441:2008 Swimming pool design standard. This Standard covers all fresh water, sea water swimming, spa pools, and geothermal pools. Overall, the revision of NZS 5826:2000 will see safer pool water quality in New Zealand. More >> |
 New Pool Alone Brochure & Radio Ads Increasingly children are being left unsupervised at public swimming pools. Tragically a two year old boy drowned at a PoolSafe Pool in 2007. The incident was reviewed by NZRA and WSNZ, the report highlighted the need for direct supervision of young children by parents and caregivers and strict enforcement of the Pool Alone policy. Lifeguards do a great job of keeping our pools safe, but they are not babysitters. Your Child Your Responsibility - is a brochure targeted at parents and caregivers of children. NZRA has also produced a series of three new Pool Alone radio ads designed to promote enjoyment and safe supervision at public pools this summer. More>>

 Swimming Pool Design Standard A new Code of Practice for Swimming Pool Design will now assist pool designers, pool installers, and associated maintenance staff in their efforts to enhance the safety of pool users – while also ensuring a consistent standard of pool design and construction throughout the country. The Standard, published in July, covers the essential aspects of the design and construction of swimming pools and provision of water treatment facilities. More>>
